A 3DCG based “Macross Frontier” promotional movie, “Listen to our song! Superdimentional Divas Live!” was selected to premier at SIGGRAPH 2011.
This movie consists of 2 music videos of two Galactic Divas; “Sheryl” and “Ranka” who’s starring in TV and Theatrical animation “Macross Frontier”. This movie represents a world first - the first ever use of ‘virtual cameras’ in a music video of a CG virtual idol. By taking unique Japanese ‘cute’ characters and converting them to 3D, the ‘cameraman’ was able to ‘shoot’ their ‘live’ performance in virtual space, resulting in dynamic and vibrant scenes the likes of which had not been previously achievable. Utilizing similar virtual camera techniques as the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Avatar’, the cameraman was able to manipulate the camera within a virtual world while seeing the effect in real-time on a hand-held monitor. Rendering unique Japanese anime characters in 3D brings them truly to life and, combined with realistic virtual camerawork, the resulting scene makes the viewer feel like they are watching an actual live concert. This is a whole new genre of animation made possible by a new era of digital technology. This movie consists of two music videos featuring singers Ranka Lee and Sheryl Nome; both originating from the popular Japanese animation series “Macross Frontier”.
